Guide to Kastellorizo Airport

Kastellorizo Airport (KZS) is a short strip on the plateau above the harbour of Greece’s easternmost island, 2 km from the village and a mile from the Turkish coast. Only small turboprops land here. Olympic Air flies from Rhodes, 45 minutes away, a few times a week all year, and there are no other routes and no international flights.

The island has a few hundred residents, one village, no cars for hire and a single minibus that meets the flights. The alternative is the ferry from Rhodes, which takes two and a half to four hours.

Transport

The village is 2 km below the airport: a minibus meets every flight for about €3, and the walk down takes half an hour. There are no taxis and no rental cars on the island.

Local tips

  • Seats are scarce: the aircraft carries a few dozen and flies a few times a week. Book the Rhodes leg and the Kastellorizo leg together, and leave a night in Rhodes if the connection is tight.
  • Pack for a lane, not a road: no taxis, no hire cars, and the village is steps and alleys. A backpack beats a trolley case.
  • Wind cancels the small turboprop a few times a season. Check the live board, and know the ferry days from Rhodes as the fallback; in a bad week, the ferry may be the only way off.
