Guide to Lemnos Airport

Lemnos Airport “Hephaestus” (LXS) lies in the flat middle of the island, 22 km from Myrina, the capital and port on the west coast, and closer to Moudros on the great bay to the east. The runway is one of the longest in Greece, built for the air force base that shares it, and the small civil terminal handles Olympic and Sky Express flights to Athens, Thessaloniki and neighbouring Lesbos all year, with a few summer charters and Aegean seasonal flights.

Lemnos is a large, low, windy island that tourism has mostly passed by, and the airport reflects it: one hall, no crowds, and a garrison town’s worth of soldiers on the Sunday evening flights. Photography of the military side is prohibited.

Transport

Myrina is 22 km west, about 25 minutes and €35 by taxi; Moudros is closer at about €25. There is no airport bus; taxis, hire cars and hotel transfers are the options.

Parking

A car park in front of the civil terminal, from about €2 an hour or €6 a day, rarely full. Keep to the civil side; the rest of the airfield is a military base.

Car rental

Lemnos rental firms meet the flights at the terminal or deliver from Myrina. The island is big, flat and sparsely served by bus, with beaches, villages and ancient sites spread over 60 km, so a car is the way to see it; the fleet is small, so book ahead for August.

Local tips

  • Arrange your transport before you land: no bus reaches the terminal, and outside Myrina and Moudros the taxis are thin on the ground.
  • The civil terminal shares a military airfield: no photographs of the runway or the aircraft on the apron, and keep to the signed road.
  • Sunday evening and holiday flights fill with soldiers and students; book seats and taxis ahead for those, and expect a full hall.
  • Ninety minutes before departure is enough; the hall is one room and the queue is one aircraft.
