Kos Airport “Hippocrates” (KGS) sits in the middle of the island at Antimachia, 24 km south-west of Kos Town and closer to Kardamena and Mastichari than to the capital. Named after the island’s most famous son, the father of medicine, it handles around three million passengers a year, nearly all between April and October, and is the gateway not only to Kos but, via the Mastichari ferry, to Kalymnos.
Fraport Greece extended the terminal in 2020–2021, so the summer waves of British, German, Dutch, Polish and Scandinavian charters now fit into one building with arrivals and departures on the same level. The bus stop, taxi rank and car park are all outside the doors.
The airport is mid-island: Kos Town is 24 km and about €40 by taxi or €3.60 by KTEL bus, while Kardamena and Mastichari are ten minutes and about €15. Kefalos and the north-coast resorts are 20–30 minutes; most package guests arrive by coach.
One open-air car park next to the terminal, from about €3 an hour or €10 a day, mostly used by locals: on Kos almost every visitor leaves by coach, taxi or hire car, so space is rarely a problem.
The rental desks are in the terminal with cars parked beside it. Kos is small and flat enough that many visitors rent for a few days rather than the whole stay, or rent bikes instead; a car makes sense for Kefalos, the Zia hills and the Kalymnos ferry.
Check where your hotel is before choosing transport: Kardamena and Mastichari are ten minutes from the airport, Kos Town is 35. A Kardamena taxi is a bargain; a Kos Town one is not.
Kalymnos is closer than Kos Town: ten minutes to Mastichari and 40 on the ferry. Climbers and divers heading there do not need to go through the capital at all.
Saturday is the changeover day for almost every package to Kos. Arrive three hours before a Saturday afternoon departure; on any other day two is plenty.
The taxi rank is small for the summer traffic and empties on Saturday afternoons; if your hotel is beyond Kardamena or Mastichari, pre-book a transfer.
The Antimachia plateau is windy: the meltemi in July and August makes for bumpy approaches and the occasional go-around, but delays are rarely long. Do not worry when the plane climbs away on the first attempt.
