Santorini Airport: frequently asked questions
General
How early should I arrive at Santorini Airport?
Two hours, two and a half for a non-Schengen flight (UK). The hall is tiny and short of seats, so arriving earlier gains nothing; add the extra time to the journey from the caldera instead, especially on cruise-ship days.
How can I check live arrivals and departures at Santorini Airport?
The boards on this site update automatically with scheduled and estimated times, gates, baggage belts and status. Open a flight for its details or subscribe to alerts for a flight number.
What should I do if my flight from Santorini is delayed?
Check the estimated time on the departures board here and confirm with the airline. EU rules give you meals after two hours of delay and possibly compensation after three hours on arrival; keep receipts and boarding passes. Wind delays are common in July and August.
Transport
How far is Santorini Airport from Fira?
About 6 km, 15–20 minutes by taxi (around €30) or 20–25 minutes by KTEL bus (€2). Oia is a further 20 minutes north.
How much is a taxi from Santorini Airport to Oia?
About €45 by day for the 30–40 minute drive, more after midnight. With only about 40 taxis on the island, pre-book a transfer for Oia rather than relying on the rank.
Is there a bus from Santorini Airport to Fira?
Yes, the KTEL Santorini airport bus, roughly hourly in season, timed to the flights, €2 on board, 20–25 minutes to Fira bus station, where you change for Oia, Kamari, Perissa and the port. It is small and fills after each arrival.
Why should I pre-book a transfer on Santorini?
Because the island has about 40 taxis and receives several jets an hour in summer; the rank queue can pass an hour and the bus leaves people behind when full. Hotel shuttles and private transfers cost about the same as a taxi and are waiting when you land.
How do I get from Santorini Airport to the ferry port?
Athinios port is 20–25 minutes by taxi (about €35) or by KTEL via a change at Fira. Allow extra time on ferry days: the single-lane port road down the cliff crawls.
Parking
Where can I park at Santorini Airport?
In the small open-air car park beside the terminal, from about €3 an hour or €10 a day, first 10 minutes free. It is used mainly by islanders, so there is usually space.
Can I wait outside the terminal for an arriving flight?
No; the forecourt is a jam of transfer minibuses on summer afternoons. Park in the car park (first 10 minutes free) and wait in the hall, after checking the live arrivals board.
Car rental
Which car rental companies are at Santorini Airport?
Avis, Budget, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar and Enterprise, plus a large number of island companies renting cars, quads and scooters, all from the arrivals hall with vehicles a short walk away.
Do I need a car on Santorini?
Not for the whole stay if you are in Fira, Oia or Imerovigli, where the villages are car-free and parking is scarce. Rent a small car for a day or two to reach Akrotiri, the wineries and the southern beaches, or for the whole stay if you are based in Kamari or Perissa.
