Its runway is one of the longest in Greece, and the small civil terminal opened in 1991. It serves Volos, the Pelion peninsula and the Thessaly plain, with summer charters and low-cost flights from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Britain, and a domestic link to Athens in the season.
Traffic is seasonal and modest, under 100,000 passengers a year, and the airport is quiet from November to April. It is also the back door to the Sporades: Volos port, half an hour away, has the ferries and hydrofoils to Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos.
