Guide to Mykonos Airport

Mykonos Airport (JMK) is 4 km south-east of Chora, the island’s whitewashed capital, on a low plateau between the town and the beaches of the south coast. It is small, windy and, in July and August, one of the most crowded airports in Greece for its size: around 1.5 million passengers a year squeeze through it, nearly all between May and October, and the summer sees direct flights from more European capitals than any island except Santorini.

Fraport Greece opened a new terminal in 2021, which fixed the queues and not much else: the runway is short, the meltemi blows straight across it, and taxis remain the island’s scarcest resource. Arrivals and departures share the one building; the bus stop, rank and car park are outside.

Transport

Chora is 4 km and about €20 by taxi, but Mykonos has only around 30 taxis, so the usual arrangement is a hotel shuttle or a pre-booked transfer. The KTEL bus runs to town a few times a day for €2; the new port for the ferries is about €25 by taxi.

Parking

A small open-air car park sits beside the terminal, from about €3 an hour or €10 a day. Visitors almost never use it: hire cars and quads go back to the rental yards and everyone else leaves by shuttle. The forecourt, not the car park, is the crowded part.

Car rental

Rental desks are in the arrivals hall with cars, quads and buggies a short walk away. With so few taxis, a hire vehicle is the practical way to reach the beaches, but Chora is car-free and its car parks fill by noon in August. Book early; the island sells out.

Local tips

  • Give your hotel the flight number and take its shuttle. With about 30 taxis on the island, the rank is the one place on Mykonos where money cannot buy time.
  • Check which port your ferry uses. The big boats leave from the new port at Tourlos, the Delos and some Tinos boats from the old port in Chora, and a transfer to the wrong one costs the ferry.
  • The meltemi is strongest in the afternoon. Morning flights are the smooth ones; afternoon arrivals in July and August should expect a bumpy approach and, now and then, a diversion to Athens.
  • The departures hall is better than it was but still short of seats in August. Two hours before a flight is enough; Ornos beach is ten minutes away for anything longer.
  • Sit on the right side of the plane landing from the south-west: the approach passes Delos and the windmills of Chora before the runway.
